Things that need to stop: autism only being represented as white eight-year old boys who know a lot about trains and airplanes.
OH SHIT.
especially because autism has been massively underdiagnosed in girls because it presents itself differently- doctors literally notice that she doesn’t show the above stereotypical signs and so they don’t diagnose her.
It’s sexist and destructive
Until VERY recently (like within a couple of decades max), doctors didn’t even think girls could get Autism or Asperger’s.
My mom asked a psychologist why and they said “because girls are taught to change their behaviour from the time they’re kids even if they have nothing wrong with them. They can keep it hidden unless they are much farther on the spectrum”. And at that point the families kept it secret, there weren’t enough for “firm proof” that women could have it, or they blamed something else.
Also, when Autism is shown as a “quirky white man”, it is basically romanticized so that people who are getting diagnosed start to think that they have super strong autism (when they have a mild version) and hate themselves for it thinking they are freaks or the R word. Not to mention the fact that the people around them don’t accept them or care to learn about basic Autism traits yet call these “quirky” autistic characters their babies.
WOWWWWW
