One of the things that was interesting to me about Scanlan’s anger and yelling wasn’t how much of it was wrong – it was how much of it Scanlan knew was wrong.
Scanlan knows perfectly fucking well that VM didn’t go to the Feywild for the sake of Vex’s issues with her father. They went to the Feywild to retrieve a bow that could help them kill the dragons and Vex didn’t even want to go to Syngorn but they got suckered into it by Garmelie.
Scanlan knows perfectly fucking well that they didn’t drive the Herd of Storms out of Westruun for the sake of Grog’s pride. They did it because Westruun was being destroyed and people were dying and it was the right thing to do.
Scanlan knows perfectly fucking well that they didn’t save Whitestone just for the sake of Percy’s name. They did it because the Briarwoods were evil, because the town was oppressed, because they were plotting a ritual that could have destroyed the world.
Scanlan knows all of that but he was in pain and he was angry and he wanted them to be angry and in pain too. So he said things that he knew were hurtful and untrue and he did it because that’s what Scanlan always does. As soon as anyone gets too close, he deflects and misdirects.
Vax has asked Scanlan how old he is. All he got was “Older than you.”
Lot of people said a lot of wrong things tonight. But none of them were wrong to say them. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out.
