this deserves a longer meta probably but
- Vex started her speech to the Raven Queen by aligning them as similar people, “I’m here today because of a bargain my brother made with you, so I know you like to make deals as much as I do.” Not only is that a classic persuasive technique for giving the speaker more trustworthy and the listener more wanting to please/impress them, but it means hat even without character information we already have, we should absolutely look at the following arguments as things Vex herself holds most dear as much as what she thinks will persuade the Raven Queen.
- Her arguments are then:
- Vax is worth bringing back just for the #aesthetic (”And what a striking Champion he is…”)
- he’s very respectful and devoted: ”He’s said psalm after psalm to you…it would be a shame to give that up.”
- with her brother back, she, Vex, will personally guarantee the absolute destruction of the Raven Queen’s archenemy.
- Pretty things, respect and devotion, and, most of all, the total destruction of her enemies. I don’t think Vex even likes that she values any of these things – she’s sure working away from the last, and feels often guilty about the first few. But they’re sure as hell the points she struck for in this most desperate of pleas. (She’s trying to grow past them, but she knows these are still the best arguments to make to catch the interest of someone like her. Or, she’s trying to grow past them, but these are still the most important things she can think of, in the heat of the moment.)
- And Vex admits that she’s suspected they’ll end up fighting Orcus anyway: “I have a feeling she pulls our fate strings anyway. She’ll make sure we get there.” So really, all she bargained was her acceptance and determination to the cause, rather than the action itself. Clever as fuck, our girl.
- I am so in love with Vex’ahlia, you guys. I love her so much. She’s complex and amazing and I love Laura Bailey for building and playing her that way, and I love this show.
