RE: Caleb and Jester, it might not have been any deeper than what you pointed out: “he thinks she’s this unmovable force of happiness unaffected by what people think of her” – one of Caleb’s bigger character flaws is his tendency to be selfish/self-focused. He’s told her he likes her, and doesn’t get why she might need to hear it again or see evidence of it. (As someone who has trouble reading social cues and can have this flaw myself, I sadly saw myself in his unintentional dickishness)

Maybe, that could be it. Like once he’s “secured” that relationship, he sees no more need to nurture it and is just moving on to the next thing.

I have the feeling that Caleb focuses his relationships in the way they can help him and nourishes them with the sole focus of securing that loyalty (because that’s the way he was treated by Trent and probably how he understands friendship and intimacy still)

Like, now that Beau stood by him with his secret, he’s favoring her to reinforce that partnership and secure that she stays on his side. Also, knowing now how young Caleb was when he “broke”, he’s probably very young still in his head and I feel he looks up to Fjord as a role model, so he was trying to please him with the frumpkin thing…

It still doesn’t justify being mean to a person who’s done you no wrong and, while Caleb might not be good at reading social cues or might not understand Jester’s emotional sensitivity… last night felt less like “misread cues” and more like intentional jabs towards her and that’s what’s not cool in my book…
