9. music

jester remembers the music maybe best of all, when she was in her room and her mom was hosting her regulars. the ruby of the sea was known first and foremost for her talents as a courtesan, but second of all, for her voice. she could tell she was a talented singer, because jester could hear her voice through the walls when she sang, even though she wasn’t raising her volume much more than when she would sing jester to sleep. she a has a voice, low and reverberating, that carried all the way to her daughter when she worked, so that even when jester couldn’t see her, she knew that her mom was near. even when she wasn’t singing, there was always some music playing, from an enchanted piano, or a music box.

it doesn’t occur to jester until she’s much older, that the music was playing for the confidentiality of the clients, as well as to drown out some things she didn’t want her daughter to hear. but the lullabies, the songs her mother sang to her at night– those were for her, and for her alone. when she has trouble sleeping, those are the songs she hums to herself.

the traveler plays her music too, sometimes. ethereal, otherworldly instrumentals she forgets almost as soon as she hears them, but they are beautiful. the only detail she can make out most nights, in the moments after she wakes up, before she forgets, is that he sounds awfully fond of vessel flutes.  

30. sex

it’s not so much that jester had the most experience, ever, when it comes to sex, as that, compared to the rest of the mighty nein, she’s basically the most experienced, basically. she has some competition when it comes to mollymauk, who she’s pretty sure is the only one other than herself with any worthwhile work experience, and there’s a chance that some of the others have played around, but it is very, very obvious to jester, having been born and raised among sex as an exchange, an art form, and an industry, when she’s in a crowd of people who are playing themselves off as experienced, when she bets they’ll actually get antsy if they as much as look at an anatomical illustration in the wrong light.

and she is having a ball with them.
