ACLU attorneys representing immigrant families separated at the border have heard reports that the government is trying to make parents pay to get their children back. Costs of reunification can include things like plane tickets and possibly DNA testing, and run thousands of dollars.

 Normally, taking people’s children hostage and making the parents pay money to get them back is called kidnapping and extortion.
