I mean, I am definitely still doing that, but Princess Leia is in my head telling me it’s a trap. Oh well, here we go!
How I feel about this character
Oooookay, yeah, mhm. That’s complicated. He’s not my favorite. By a long shot. He’s like… 5 or 6 out of 7. He used to be higher on the list. Hell, the Pit Fiend fight is the single reason the first character I played was a bard. I do like his development, though. I like the person he is, mostly, with one glaring exception, when he comes back in the end.
- All the people I ship romantically with this character
Honestly, only Pike.
- My non-romantic OTP for this character
Also Pike. And Grog. But I don’t like their shenanigans moments together, I like the emotionally sincere ones. Also Kaylie. Kaylie is great and I would have loved to see more of them together.
- My unpopular opinion about this character
Ahahahahaha. Okay. You can’t not take the memory modification of allies into consideration when you’re trying to judge his character. He deserved a public degrading to chaotic neutral waaaay more than Vex did. “What’s my mother’s name?” was a dick move. An effective one, but a dick move, and I cheered when Percy got him back for that. It was almost as dickish as Sam having that cheat sheet. Ioun was not the right fit for him. She wasn’t for Percy, either, but she also wasn’t right for Scanlan. Scanlan is among those most fucked over by the horrible pacing of the Vecna arc. He was such a dick to Vex, over and over and over again, even though she loved him so much. The fact that he never thought to apologize to her is probably what I like the least about him.
- One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Fucking apologize to Vex. Also, I just wish the Vecna arc was longer so his character development could be shown more. There were moments, but like. Not enough. And I will always call for more Kaylie.
Fun Fact: My opinions about Scanlan, Ioun, and the god arc were the only ones that ever got me anon hate on this website 🙂
I am really sorry if it came off as a trap. While I do love Scanlan, he is often so glorified by the fandom that I always appreciate more critical perspectives. It helps in expanding my understanding of the character and recontextualizes my enjoyment of them.
Honestly, for many of the same reasons, I would also love a breakdown for Vax. Also Keyleth, but this time for the opposite reasons.
I can give you Keyleth:
-
How I feel about this character
Keyleth is great. She has the unthankful job of being the moral compass, but I really dig her development, and she has a few really great moments that are, naturally, underappreciated. Marisha is also probably one of the strongest improv-ers at the table. When she’s on her game, she’s fucking on.
- All the people I ship romantically with this character
Vaxleth is fine. I love her crush on Vex. I’ve listed her for Pike and vice versa works as well. I really want to know what Marisha meant when she said EVERY lady on VM was into Percy. I want her to join J’mon’s harem at some point, as like, a freelancer or something. Her and Grog are also such a power couple.
Not Kash. Never Kash.
- My non-romantic OTP for this character
Vex and Grog, again, just awesome relationships. I also adore her and Percy’s friendship, those two are so good together. Also her relationships with Allura and Kima.
- My unpopular opinion about this character
I mean, away from here, liking her is pretty unpopular. I cringe more at most Scanlan songs than I do at Keyleth’s awkward monologues, but that’s just me.
- One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
I would have loved for all the set up of her relationship with Melora to pay off. Like, in general, I would have loved a longer and more in-depth god arc. Including her actually talking to Vax about his situation and impending death and all. She derseved better, too.
