Funny how we regularly turn down job applications for law student internships for having a typo in their cover letters but having three different women publicly accuse you of sexual assault doesn’t stop you from being hired for the highest possible legal job in the country
Did I fucking stutter?
I wouldn’t hire a law student who was ~only accused~ of sexual assault either.
For those of you who still don’t get it:
This is not a trial. It’s a job interview. If Kavanaugh has been wrongfully accused, then yes, that is too bad, he should sue Dr. Ford for slander, damages, et cetera. But at this point in time, we have a job interview at which three different people have spoken up about the candidate’s history that shows he lacks important traits for the job (in this case, moral character, dignity, etc.). Saying the employer at that point is “punishing” the candidate by not hiring that person is ridiculous. An employer in this situation normally would just pick someone else.
And, not that this is a trial, but: sworn testimony is evidence. In fact, in most cases, the most important evidence. We’re talking about something that happened many, many years ago. What other evidence is there? Yes, Kavanaugh also testified under penalty of perjury. That’s also “evidence.” That it goes against Dr. Ford’s sworn testimony doesn’t make her testimony suddenly not “evidence.” If you’re dismissing Dr. Ford because all she has is “her word,” then you’re saying you value Kavanaugh’s word over Dr. Ford’s, for whatever reason that may be. Is it because she’s a woman? Is it because he’s a judge?
Are men more trustworthy than women?
Are lawyers more trustworthy than scientists?
For all of you saying “if I said _____ and two people corroborated…” what’s your point? If I applied for a job and three people did come out and said I was horrible, that I was a murderer, a rapist, a pedophile, etc., then I would 100% understand if I didn’t get the job I applied for. Duh. I would take action thereafter (sue them for slander), but I wouldn’t think the employer was being unreasonable, especially if the job was the fucking SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES.
Do you know why people don’t falsely accuse people? Because they’re usually not that terrible, and also because if you falsely accuse people, there are consequences. Laws on slander exist. People don’t usually lie just to fuck with other people’s lives because most people are decent human beings, and also because they might get sued. Now, Dr. Ford went further than just talking by testifying under penalty of perjury.
If you are that vindictive, go ahead and accuse someone you don’t like of sexual assault, get few of your friends to do it with you. Tell their employer. And when they sue you for slander, testify under penalty of perjury that you didn’t lie. I’ll wait. Now, why would I do that, you would say.
Why would Dr. Ford?
We rarely even spread false rumors about people we don’t like. Why go to the press and lie? Why volunteer to testify under penalty of perjury?
But listen, while I personally believe Dr. Ford here, my anger isn’t from the belief that Judge Kavanaugh did assault Dr. Ford but may still get confirmed. It’s from the realization that somehow, with this particular nominee, these Senators are making the incredible decision to hire someone who’s been so accused. Why? There are other incredibly qualified judges. The confirmation hearing showed that this man also shouts, doesn’t answer questions, has a temper, et cetera. Even he admitted he shouldn’t have said some of the things he said. Pick another Republican judge, one who hasn’t been accused of indecent behavior by multiple people.
