#asianelephant Nellie lifts her trunk and takes a long drink from the stream of a #firehose courtesy of the @miamidadefirerescue team! Enriching the lives of #zoo animals is all about providing novel stimuli, and bringing a #firetruck on zoo grounds to hose down the elephants certainly counts as a unique experience. This particular #environmentalenrichment experience was part of a demonstration put on by the zoo for attendees of the #elephantmanagersassociation conference. #askmeaboutelephants #asianelephant #zooelephant #onlyelephantsshouldwearivory (at Zoo Miami) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpZIyl5AsuZ/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zll4tea43es
This enrichment demo was a really interesting example of what an elephant’s priorities can be! Both Nellie and her companion Dalip ignored the firehoses and gathered crowd at first, going straight for watermelons and ice treats that had been scattered across the yard.
Once all the snacks were gone, they both took the time to get a little wet and drink from the spray of the hoses.
Dalip’s drinking method was a little less graceful than Nellie’s, with his trunk just flopped to the side instead of lifted, but his magnificent tusks made up for it a little.
