Iconic seafarer beards became a trend to scare away pesky mermaids.

Mermaid, seeing a bald pirate: Zero threat…!
Mermaid, seeing a hairy, bearded pirate: If I get too close their face tentacles will eat me…!

Most mermaids only grow short beards as not to scare baby mermaids (longer beards look like the tentacled mouths of hungry squids and octopuses).

Pirates use this innate fear to their advantage to protect themselves from mermaids, hence the iconic beards and hat:

Campaign 1 Episode 69 // 87

‘I heard you’.

#their talk on the ship is so underrrated#at the time so many people used it as an excuse to say that all vex and percy do is have sex#and that it invalidates their relationship#but they really ignored how earnest the preceding conversation was#percy quietly confessing that he heard but that he didn’t want to embarrass vex by bringing it up at the wrong time#quickly reassuring her that the only reason that it motivated him to make the next move was because he never would’ve hoped otherwise#and this whole time he didn’t#that until then he under the impression that it was completely unrequited#vex following it up by reassuring him that no matter how ugly the thought or gruesome the fear#he should never feel like he couldn’t share his thoughts with her#and when he does share his worst ideas she doesn’t pretend to be unaffected by it#but she doesn’t begrudge him for having bad thoughts#just redirects them somewhere more positive#i’m never gonna stop being sappy about these two aren’t i? (via @notaficwriter)

im still thinking abt this pic

“traditional” and “contemporary” are not mutually exclusive

I have so many feels about this! Especially as an anthro major, I hate it when ppl think that indigenous folks can’t use tech because it doesn’t make them genuine. Like fuck that noise!

Also this photo is precious.

These two are of the Kyikatejê-gavião indigenous group from Pará, Brazil. They’re also sometimes called the Hawk Kyikatejê due to their use of hawk feathers in their arrows. As of 2010 there are approximately only 320 members of the group. Not only do they have a traditional history stretching back hundreds of years, but they also have their own football team (the first indigenous team in Brazil).

This photo was taken by Laercio Esteves.

It’s great and all that you guys are having these profound realizations about how indigenous folks are ~just like you~ but how about you take some time to learn about these people who so generously helped you learn that
