Vex and Scanlan: Talks Machina

out-there-on-the-maroon:

I breaks my heart that Vex has taken on the role of like, the mediator when it comes to bad father figures in her life.

Seems she took on that role with Syldor over the past year, with Vax not wanting anything to do with him and Vex trying to “make peace” with the man who abused them for years (which like, she’s allowed to do that but it worries me, the way she talks about that, and the way Vax reacts to their father. By which I mean characters, Laura the person can do whatever she wants, that’s NOT up for debate here.)

And now she’s doing that with Scanlan. He tried to wipe her memory and Laura says she’s not mad at all about that. He wrote off the Feywild arc as her own personal “daddy issues” when that isn’t even accurate and is a horribly cruel thing to say to a friend besides, before leaving. He said the meanest things he could think of to her brother, her boyfriend, and her found family, trying to torpedo their self esteem in a vulnerable time. And to make him stay, she’s saying “we deserved it.” She’s saying it’s totally cool that he treated her, her brother, her boyfriend, her found family, like that. ‘Cause he’s back now! Never mind that he came in disguise, tried to wipe her memory, didn’t apologize, and flaunted a replacement Grog in their faces.

This breaks my heart.

Forgiveness is something you do for yourself, not something you owe to a person who did you wrong, hurt you, or was vicious to you. It means moving on for your own personal wellbeing, to stop dwelling on the past and stewing on things you can’t go back and change. It doesn’t mean forgetting, or allowing people to continue to say horrible things to you while you grin and bear it. It doesn’t mean when someone comes back into your life that you must accept them with open arms and closed eyes.

I have FEELINGS about Vex and her tendencies to dismiss her own feelings for the good of the group or other people. And they’re vaguely twin and very Vax critical so I don’t know how well they’d fly over here, but let’s just say, there are trends to this.
