So, like, 90% of the comic was amazing. Vax was hilarious, most of the twin banter was on point, Keyleth was just perfect. I especially love the facial expressions the twins have going on most of the time. And bless everyone for not playing up Vax and Keyleth’s first meeting as too much of a meet cute.

I, ah, can’t help but be a little put off by Vex’s characterization though. Not about being cranky for risking their lives for 13 gold. That’s fine, that’s her, that’s reasonable even. Being callous about, you know, infanticied and the general situation? Also very much in-tune with her and her jokes that are extreeeemely poorly timed sometimes (lute-playing, anyone?).

But, you know, looking down on peasants “I’m technically noble because my father was”-Vex is definitely not “If I could tear your blood from my veins I would”-Vex. Like, at all. Especially when she says stuff like that to Vax… True, she has never been as preoccupied as Vax in regards to their mom in what we saw, but if she had ever been like this, Vax’s reaction to her actually being nobility would have been a lot different. Hell, Vex’s issues about her social standing would have been different. This just feels… Out of place. And off.

Speaking of which, early episodes!Vax that we saw hasn’t exactly been the clear moral compass he seems to be pitted as here. That only happened slowly while the Vaxleth situation developed and he got into looking for religion. Before that, he was much more neutral, if slightly more inclined to help, from what I recall. Ah, well. Conflict and banter and plot necessity, I suppose.

Also, Trinket not being seen is a bit weird. I get not taking him along into the swamp – there’s no way the puny single digit strength twins would have been able to haul him out of anything if he’d sunken in. Not taking him along when tailing someone I get, too. A bear isn’t too stealthy. What I don’t understand is not mentioning him, or showing him in the interim.

And if this is supposed to take place before Vex got him, that makes no sense either. The twins clearly have been out of Syngorn for a while at this point and are way older than the Vex in Laura’s short story was. Also the Vex we see here is way too capable and way too jaded to be taken advantage of the way she was in that story.
