I’m guessing it’s not going to be a permanent thing? Maybe? Sam has admitted before that Scanlan was great and all, but the stats were a little one-sided. He just couldn’t compete with the other characters. Maybe Scanlan will go on a journey that will let him move his stats around a little so that they’re not so lopsided and he can have an AC higher than 14 or do better damage. Even Grog only has a 17 at this level, but he only takes half damage while raging, cancelling out some of the harm.

Bards are a supporting class and Scanlan is the fucking BEST at that shit, like he doesn’t have to do the most damage–he has to enable the other guys to do more damage. In almost every major fight he has done some seriously clutch shit that made everyone else able to get shit done–kevdak fight? he did very little damage but he basically won it for them with one spell by doing hold person, and having a high enough spell DC to have it hold, and being smart enough to cast it and on the right person. He solo’d a whole fucking mansion by himself. Not only did he get the killing blow on the pit fiend, he then kept the entire city from murdering them with a perfect (and perfectly calibrated) spell. how many battles never started because he talked them out of it? how many vital hits did the others land because he gave them Inspiration? he can take the ‘moderately armored’ feat and get medium armor and a shield and bring his ac up to like 18 unattuned. ALL I’M SAYING IS, HE 100% CAN COMPETE AND THEY WOULD BE SO FUCKING DEAD WITHOUT HIM
